Hagar was a slave from Egypt. Her owner Sarai made her get pregnant by Abraham. She had Abraham’s son, Ishmael, and then Sarai (Sarah) had Abraham’s son Isaac. When Sarah saw Ishmael insulting and mocking Isaac, she became angry and made Abraham throw his son and Hagar out of their camp:

Now this was a very difficult thing for Abraham because of his son. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be concerned about the boy and your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac. But I will also make a nation of the slave’s son because he is your offspring.”

Early in the morning Abraham got up, took bread and a waterskin, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her and the boy away. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beer-sheba. When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I can’t bear to watch the boy die!” So as she sat nearby, she wept loudly.

God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What’s wrong, Hagar? Don’t be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy from the place where he is. Get up, help the boy up, and sustain him, for I will make him a great nation.” Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the waterskin and gave the boy a drink. God was with the boy, and he grew; he settled in the wilderness and became an archer. He settled in the Wilderness of Paran, and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

Hagar gave up when her bread and water ran out. Yahweh had promised her son a great family of tribes as his offspring, though, so He opened her eyes to see His provision. The drink of water was just the beginning. She was also no longer a slave.

As Jesus told Nicodemus, no one can see His Kingdom without being born of Yahweh. We were children of the slave woman, too (Galatians 4:21-31). Now, we are sons and daughters of the Living God. He has set us free from the dominion of darkness and death, and made us able to see our freedom and His provision. Ask for clearer sight. Ask for direction. Expect greatness to touch your life and your posterity as you align them with the Kingdom of Heaven.
