Your Conscience

We have been given a conscience so that we will hate evil. One problem, however, is that it cannot always discern what is evil. It prompts us to know that there is evil, but doesn’t empower us to tell evil from good. One person’s conscience will give one reading of a certain situation, another’s will give a completely different reading. It is like having a dashboard light in your car that comes on to warn that your car won’t run without fuel, but not having a fuel gauge.

Adam and Eve did not gain the ability to discern good from evil when they ate from the tree of death. They simply were suddenly aware that there was good, and there was evil. Nudity suddenly felt bad. Being around Yahweh suddenly felt bad. We all have a sense of having been wronged that is sensitive and sometimes loud. We usually disagree on what constitutes wronging others, though.

We need more than a conscience to walk in righteousness. We need ears to hear the voice of our Shepherd, and we need to know when a voice that we hear is His voice, and we need hearts that He can guide to obey what He speaks to us. He wants us to have those things. Ask Him to make it happen!
