Great Foundation

It is easier to rebuild a roof than a foundation. And you can’t build a roof first. And if you don’t build the foundation well, you will have problems.

If you have been saved five years or more and have not read the Bible at least once, you are building on a foundation that could develop problems. If you are not a teacher, reading it once in your life may be enough. Not knowing how to look up certain Scriptures or certain ideas can leave you vulnerable to corrupt teaching, though.

I suggest that you find a translation that seems to use words you use when you talk. A translation, not a paraphrase. Add a paraphrase if you want to, but if the only Bible you read is a paraphrase, that can be a bad foundation, too. Get one that has study notes with it. A men’s study Bible, or a women’s study Bible. If you are a Methodist, get a Wesleyan study Bible next. If you are Pentecostal, get a study Bible that aims down that path. After a few years get another one. Don’t waste money on leather covers if it costs $40 extra. Save that money to buy your next study Bible. Get a Thomson Chain Reference that leads you through the Book to see concepts that thread throughout the whole of it.

Most important, though, is that after you get a strong foundation built, you build your life on it. Be awesome. That is what Jesus died to invite you to do.
