Sons of God
All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.
(Romans 8:14 HCSB ©®)
If you discern that someone is being led by His Spirit, it should be deducible that person is His son or daughter. That declaration is not reversable. All of the sons and daughters of Yahweh are not led by His Spirit.
Using “the” evidence of speaking in tongues as a test regarding someone having been filled with the Spirit is religious tradition that is not based on Scripture. Many people who were filled with the Spirit prophesied instead of speaking in tongues. Because of this imposition of a hurdle created by men, many people who are in congregations led by theologians who require this to be done in order to become “acceptable” in their congregation fake the gift to receive the acceptance and avoid the condemnation. If you are not convinced that much of what is presented as valid tongues in many meetings is fake, ask someone who has the gift of interpretation of tongues how often the proper interpretation of some noise is simply “blah, blah, blah.”
A much more valid test would be how often someone has been led by the Spirit. Means of testing for this question could include examining how much of the person’s responses to situations is influenced by the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) or how often the person is clearly aligned with some work of God that is supernatural or powerful or life-imparting.
To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled. They profess to know God, but they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and disqualified for any good work.
(Titus 1:15-16 HCSB ©®)
For we too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, captives of various passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, detesting one another.
But when the goodness and love for man
appeared from God our Savior,
He saved us—
not by works of righteousness that we had done,
but according to His mercy,
through the washing of regeneration
and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
This Spirit He poured out on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Savior,
so that having been justified by His grace,
we may become heirs with the hope of eternal life.
This saying is trustworthy. I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed God might be careful to devote themselves to good works. These are good and profitable for everyone.
(Titus 3:3-9 HCSB ©®)
We were not saved by works, but we were saved for works. Works that His Spirit leads us to walk in.
