The Surrender of All Things

A rich young elitist asked Jesus what he needed to do to be saved. Jesus told him to obey the law. “I have done that,” was his reply to that instruction.

Jesus then gave him two more instructions, to which he refused to surrender.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was hung by Hitler’s thugs, wrote, “When Jesus calls a man, He bids him come and die.”

We are happy to give Jesus our death. In that deal, we trade His death and resurrection for our death and our dive into the lake of fire. What He wants, actually, is that we instead give Him our lives. Rich, poor, educated, ignorant, every race, every nationality, we resist that tooth and nail until His Spirit sets us free from fear and pride and culture and laziness.

Then, when we’ve finally seen Truth, and surrender our selves and the rest of our breaths, we enter Life and purpose and love. You have already given Him your death. Every morning, give Him your life.
