Much Instruction

Just then Jesus met them and said, “Good morning!” They came up, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him. Then Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see Me there.”

As He was walking along the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen. “Follow Me,” He told them, “and I will make you fish for people!”

So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
Matthew 6:31-33

As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” So he got up and followed Him.
Matthew 9:9

Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Many of the commandments of Jesus seem to be to particular people in specific situations. Some seem to be general, to all of His followers. How can we know what He is saying to us in any of them?

Ask Him. Many times His disciples asked each other some question about what He said or what He meant by it, even when He was in hearing distance of their silly conversations. Every time in Scripture they asked Him for clarification or explanation, they received it. You are always in hearing distance of Him, and He of you. Ask Him anything. Ask Him everything. Even if you already know the answer, ask for confirmation. Ask for clear instructions regarding the current situation or concern.

If you want to receive some promise from Him, don’t presume that because some phrase or paragraph is in the Scriptures that it has life to you. If you see something you want to walk in, ask for it. If we, being evil, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will He give the Holy Spirit to us when we ask? His Spirit knows everything. Ask.

As you go forth under all of His authority, teach others what He has taught you.
