Knowing Yourself

Several schools of modern psychology attempt to improve our lives by helping us know ourselves better. We attempt to know ourselves by uncovering our pasts. We are instructed to know our current selves by uncovering our feelings.

We can only know true measurements by using some guide that exists beyond our selves, though. We need a device that can expose unlevel planes if we want to check on levelness. A plumb is used for vertical truth. Thermometers and voltmeters and clocks and calendars and a host of other tools are used to measure things that relate to us and our environments.

We can only learn who we really are by learning who Jesus is, and learning who He declares us to be. Men’s opinions and even our own opinions are curved and crooked and broken sticks that have no value for determining identities and purposes.

The Lord reigns! He is robed in majesty;
The Lord is robed, enveloped in strength.
The world is firmly established;
it cannot be shaken.
Your throne has been established
from the beginning;
You are from eternity.
The floods have lifted up, Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their pounding waves.
Greater than the roar of many waters—
the mighty breakers of the sea—
the Lord on high is majestic.
Lord, Your testimonies are completely reliable;
holiness is the beauty of Your house
for all the days to come.
