Enemies and Tools
Who was David’s greater enemy – Goliath or Saul? Possibly, neither was an enemy.
Saul was a marker to point out to David all of the human attributes not to allow in his life. After 14 years or so of that educational experience, anything that was like Saul that had been in David was gone.
Goliath was a marker to point to the destiny appointed to David to lead the nation of Israel. Where he stood was the door that had to be opened in order for David to approach the throne. Facing him, David stepped through that door. Through that door, Jesus was brought forth to be a Door to greater things and places.
Then they asked for a king, so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for 40 years. After removing him, He raised up David as their king, of whom He testified: ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will carry out all My will.’
“From this man’s descendants, according to the promise, God brought the Savior, Jesus, to Israel.”
