Motivating Problems
I’m convinced that most of the study of human anatomy happened with the intent of trying to learn how to extend life, not just satisfy curiosity about physiology. Money and attention move toward problems.
I’m convinced that most cutting-edge technology advances are funded in order to create better weapons, not just to enjoy creativity or make new toys. Staying in control motivates those in control to ever seek new ways of controlling.
The positive side of this coin in my mind is that problems make us learn. Problems make us study and grow. Some of the increase in knowledge and skill and access that problems drive us to obtain is related to knowing Yahweh. We meet Him as the Provider when we lack; we meet Him as the Healer when we are ill; we meet Him as a Mighty Warrior when we have enemies; He is Wisdom when we don’t know what path to take.
Don’t waste your problems. Use them to gain, to learn, to build, to fly. Count it all joy when you discover a problem; it is there to improve your faith and to bring you to maturity and fruitfulness (James 1:2-4). A plane has the power to fly because of the resistance of the wind. It is using its wings to convert the resistance in the wind to lift.
