Blind Love

Voltaire: “It is not love that should be depicted as blind, but self-love.”

Eros is a word that denotes self-love. It amounts to me liking some things or some people because they make me feel good. It usually doesn’t  focus on one desire longer than 2 years or so, unless it is revived by something that freshens the desirable target up in some way. My new car, my new phone, my new job, my new girl.

Agape refers to something very different. It focuses on a target to bless it. I don’t have to like someone to have agape for them. I could actually spend my life pouring agape on someone I don’t like at any point in the process. Loving them with agape has their blessing in heart, not mine.

Eros is blind to facts, truth, costs, and real values. Agape is wide awake to all of those things, but is a fruit of the Spirit of God (Galatians 5:22,23). Agape can see all of that and more, but not be influenced by any of it if the Holy Spirit leads me to action in spite of discomfort, cost, or fear.

Blind love is a desire that blinds me. Agape is a fountain that opens my eyes. You must be born again to see the Kingdom of Heaven in your life (Jesus to Nicodemus: John 3:3).
