To Know Him

It is a very grand day when we change from looking at the world in order to try to understand God to looking at God in order to try to understand His creation. It is a day of wonders when we stop trying to figure out who Jesus is by looking at the church. When we shift from looking at the creation in order to try to understand the Creator, to looking at the Creator in order to try to understand His creation, our lives rise from the mud to the clouds.

I have some ceramic items that were made by a friend. Knowing the artist helps me properly value the cup and the vase and the rest. Looking at the creations might give me some ideas about their maker, but very limited ones. Knowing him gives me some understanding about why one is green and one is blue, one is for coffee and one is for flowers. Jesus made scorpions and peacocks. And you. We and they only begin to make sense when we begin to learn Who Jesus is.

Oddly, some of the best environments in which to learn better Who He is are the nasty things that happen in our lives. Don’t miss any more opportunities to know Him. The next time you encounter a difficulty will be a great opportunity to dive in the deep end of His presence and His person. Swim with your eyes open, no matter how badly it burns.
