To What are you Committed?

Many people are not committed to anything. Most people who are committed to something are simply committed to their own comfort. Some are not even committed enough to their own comfort to make any sacrifices to make the presence of comfort reliable.

If I am committed to something, I should have subsequent or subservient commitments: if I want comfort, I need money; if I need money, I need a means of obtaining money; if my need for money is on-going, my means of obtaining money must be on-going…

If my commitment to something is great, I will make great commitments to the process and costs of the higher commitment.

There is great value in being committed to a measure of maturity that makes me a complete person: not lacking in any important thing. James suggested that the cost, the process to achieving that goal includes difficulties and training and tests. The success is not just in the toleration of things, but in not quitting, no matter how difficult or costly or painful or scary the process becomes. My Dad, Who breathed the stars, and loves me immeasurably, designed the course, and designed me to be perfected through it.

Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
