Greater Works
Every instruction from Yahweh to any particular person as recorded in Scripture is not necessarily a command to you. If that were true, you would need to both always carry a sword with you and never carry a sword with you. Everyone who became a follower of Jesus would need to wait in Jerusalem until Pentecost. Everyone would need to go out and find some way to betray Him to Jewish religious leaders.
Some instructions were to certain people in certain circumstances. Some were conditional, meaning that if something happened, then the proper response is a certain command. Some promises are similar – if you do this, that will surely happen.
One of the promises that is contingent on faith or behavior is recorded by John at chapter 14 verse 12: “He who believes in Me” is the qualifier, the contingency. The promise is “he will do the works I have done, and he will do greater works than I have done.”
Do you believe in Jesus? Then please proceed to be awesome. Do not hold back. Be filled with faith and leave wonders and marvels trailing behind you all your days. Teach others to do likewise. Jesus lives forever to pray you through.
