Others’ Idols

We would quickly judge a Hindu for worshiping Jesus one day and bowing before an idol the next. Hindus don’t have a problem with Jesus being god. They would not accept that He is God, but gladly add Him as another of their millions of gods. Some even worship Him on days, for good measure.

We are not so quick to recognize our idols, to whom we bow just as readily as a Hindu might bow to theirs. The American economy, my comfortable home, my job, my respectability, my important and famous friend, my reputation, my well-educated family members, my retirement account, my dog, my expensive car, my position on the church board, my knowledge, my followers, yada. If we are studying the market numbers or the teams’ numbers or the Facebook following with more hunger and excitement than we are reading the Book, there are candy and cookie bits on the ground that we can follow to an oven. (Hansel and Gretel, heh?)

Even if we have read the Book 6 times now, there is more we have not yet had veils removed to see in it. Eat your spinach. Do your exercises. Physical exercise profits a bit, but spiritual exercise will help you sooner and later (1 Timothy 4:8).
