Jacob could not be blessed with the change of his identity from Jacob (“Usurper”) to Israel (“Prince of God”) until his hip was displaced and he walked with a terrible limp. Saul was not useful to Jesus until he had been broken with blindness and then with humiliation by having to lean on the prayer of a follower of Jesus, (Whom he hated) and being baptized by him.
When we surrender to Jesus, it is most effectively done on our faces rather than on our feet, I think. The greater our sub-mission, the more effective our baptism in His Spirit will be, I think.
He gives grace to the humbled.
